The awards benefit artists at a crucial, early stage in their careers: from providing much-needed art materials with which to create new work, sums for studio costs or other outgoings, to a boost of visibility, acclaim and esteem on a national platform.

The winner of the Hermione Hammond Drawing Award at the New English Art Club Annual Exhibition 2021, Zuzanna Salamon, wrote about winning the £2,000 prize: "After winning the award I received lots of messages from people who saw my work, it was amazing to know that people felt a connection with it. It proved to me that there is a future in what I love to do. So often, young people that choose an art path hear that being an artist is not a real profession, but having the opportunity to be part of such esteemed exhibitions proves this isn’t true."

With her prize money, Zuzanna was able to fund online art courses and invest in new materials. She says, "for a young artist like me, it’s an amazing adventure to exhibit among so many well-established and well-known artists, and the Mall Galleries is one of the few places that offers this experience. Their call for entries are great for young and emerging artists, as they don’t look at CVs but focus on the meaning and quality of the work."
