Naomi Alexander ROI

Statement

Naomi Alexander prefers to have a project in mind when she starts a painting. For the past eight years she has been working on Jewish subjects in Lithuania. Naomi often travels to Israel where her source of inspiration are the interiors of Arab houses. Other important influences include her immediate family and domestic scenes. 

Methodology

Alexander's main medium is oil paint, although she does also use watercolour and printmaking, using canvas or watercolour paper as a vehicle. She uses a projector to throw her images on the canvas before she creates, experimenting with composition. Her material is very personal to her and she often has to travel abroad to obtain it. She tends to work on just one project at a time, working from her sketches. Occasionally, she paints straight onto canvas if she is doing a portrait. Depending on the commission it can take her anything from 60 hours to 900, or in the case of a residency, two years.
