Bob Last PS (1932 - 2020)
Statement
Last's work is primarily informed by observation. Whether looking at the human figure, landscape or object, his interest was in shape and form and a balance between nature and abstract. Some work was planned from sketches or photos, but he also liked to start not knowing in which direction the painting would go. Last worked in all mediums but particularly favoured pastel with its vibrant colour and versatility of application and mark making.
Methodology
Bob works in a wide variety of mediums: oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolour and print. He likes to work large, whether on canvas or paper. He is inspired by the landscape and human form but also love to create purely abstract work where the emphasis is on composition, form, colour and texture. When working in pastel he likes to prepare a surface with pumice powder or other textured material and often underpaint in acrylic to start the picture off. Bob works fast and likes to continue with a single painting until it is finished although he usually works on a particular theme and produce several related pieces.
