I create paintings of transport and subjects drawn from an enormous archive of different media, including works from negatives. Bequeathed to me from my grandfather, who was interested in photography, between the wars from his work on the railway.
Methodology
Rowan uses a brush to paint with acryllic on panel or stretched linen. He often uses a scraping back effect in his artwork. He uses paper, which is from a sustainable source. Rowan usually works on two artworks at a time. He works from elderly archive monochrome negatives and is able to originate an accurate approximation of the colour. He also draws from life. Before creating his artwork he usually prepare a painstakingly detailed drawing. He regularly travels to the house/studio that he shares with his wife in Haripal/West Bengal to depict the many idiosyncratic Hindu temples in the vicinity. He also lives in a particularly beautiful part of the UK with inspirational views from his house.
