Statement

My work is deeply personal and very close to home. I mean this in the literal sense as I work at home and I paint what is around me. Having moved recently and gained the delight that is a small English garden, I spent the spring and summer watching flowers come into bloom. It was very beautiful out there but I still had the desire to bring the flowers inside the house to capture them in paint. My collection of objects and fabrics, like a cast of characters waiting for their turn, are photographed, arranged and curated. My family and close friends are ongoing patient and generous subject matter.

Life to me is very much about the small things: if we can take pleasure in those then we are fortunate. I love to paint and I try to portray quiet daily events that, in the frantic way life is lived, can often be missed - small, introspective moments, recorded and thus given importance.

Bio

b. 1963

1980 – 1983 Natal Technikon Diploma in Graphic Design

2000 – 2003 study of painting in oils at the studio of Pascale Chandler

I have been painting since I first studied with Pascale Chandler in Durban in 2000. I was born in England but left for Southern Africa when I was 8, returning to live here 6 years ago. My work focuses on portraiture, the human form and still life, and my painting practice is mostly an attempt to capture the informal moments of everyday life around me.

I was honoured last year to be shortlisted by the Royal Society of Portrait Painters for the William Lock Portrait Prize and the Ondaatjie Prize for Portraiture.

I received the inaugural Roger Remington Award for an outstanding painting at the Royal Insititute of Oil Painters annual exhibition 2024 and was elected to be an associate member of the ROI.

My work is represented in London by Jonathan Cooper Gallery.
