Statement

My Art is about communication. My paintings communicate a feeling I get when looking at things, this is then represented by tone and colour. I paint scenes and moments which move me, and I paint the visual impression in these moments as that, for me, is the aspect of reality that I believe generates the feeling behind a scene worth painting. I am greatly influenced by the original impressionists, and elder artists such as Corot, and Turner. I like to create artwork that is immediately recognisable, to capture contemporary life in a relevant way, and to reveal the world to someone who doesn't look for it, in a way that only a painting could capture and hold attention.

Methodology

All my paintings begin with direct observation, I am always on the lookout for inspiration and work new ideas into a sketchbook where I annotate quick sketches or sometimes more finished drawings with colour notes I take with reference to oil colour charts I keep to hand. Back in the studio, reference material is studied from drawings, to notes, to small plein air paintings, even videos in order to create a quick oil sketch as a starting point. From there, I create an array of different sketches and studies focusing on composition, colour, and value which gradually increase in detail until I finally put it all together on a larger canvas. All paintings have a unique path to completion from this point, and I like to think each piece can stand alone as a statement in paint.
