Statement

Stephen Brown is proficient at immersing his viewers into the rich landscapes around his Devon home. Using almost exclusively oil paint, Brown depicts the warm glow of summers in Devon, Wiltshire, and Gloucestershire. He is also a skilled Marine artist, whose works capture the quaint yet provocative draw of the British coastlines.

Bio

Brown was born in 1947, in Chard, Somerset, and attended the Somerset College of Art. Into the 1970s, he received training from artist Patrick Larking RP ROI, and became fascinated by Larking's contemporaries from the Royal Academy of Art, such as Sickert, George Clausen and Augustus John.

In 1997, Brown was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) after a recommendation from fellow artist and admirer of his work, Ken Howard RA. He later received membership of The Small Paintings Group in 2003.

Publications

Stephen Brown has published numerous articles on oil painting for International Artist Magazines. He has also participated in the BBC production Art-The Big Event where Rolf Harris led a team of artists to paint a giant replica of Constable's The Hay Wain.
