Hermione Hammond £2,000 Drawing Award

The Hermione Hammond Drawing Award is a £2,000 award for emerging artists to encourage and reward the practice of contemporary representational drawing.

The award is given as a prize at the New English Art Club Annual Exhibition at Mall Galleries for a drawing by an emerging artist aged 35 or under.

Acceptable media include pencil, pen, ink, charcoal, conté, pastels, oil pastels, sanguine, or printmaking and mixed media works where draughtsmanship is in evidence.

The winner is chosen by the estate of Hermione Hammond from exhibited, eligible works by artists aged 18 to 35 at the time of submission.

Previous winners include Gideon Summerfield (2017), Martin Karpisz, professionally known as Siguel (2018), George Spencer Jackson (2019), Merlin Bateman-Paris (2020), Zuzanna Salamon (2021), Dylan Leddington (2022), Habib Hajallie (2023), and Rizza Zahid (2024).

The award was established in 2012 in memory of the artist Hermione Hammond (1910 - 2005) to encourage artists to develop their drawing skills.

Writing about Hermione Hammond, Richard Nathanson says: "Her art belongs, I feel, to that particular and peculiar English pictorial gift that embraces Edward Lear, Quentin Blake, Hugh Casson and John Ward. An art where the deceptively lightest of touches can magically conjure up the essence of the subject." (Sotheby's, 2006)

Since 2017, the Hermione Hammond Drawing Award has been awarded in partnership with the Federation of British Artists at Mall Galleries.
