Artist Spotlight: Malcolm Ashman
/ Royal Society of British Artists
The Royal Society of British Artists Annual Exhibition 2025 is opening soon at Mall Galleries, running from 26 February until 8 March.
We spoke to Malcolm Ashman RBA, an acrylic landscape and portrait artist exhibiting at the Annual Exhibition, about his practice.

Could you briefly introduce yourself and your artistic background?
My name is Malcolm Ashman, I'm a multi-disciplinary artist working in painting, drawing, collage, photography and sculpture. I'm a member of the Royal Society of British Artists, president of the Bath Society of Artists and an academician at the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol.
What areas appeal to you about landscapes and portraiture, and why?
For many years the rural landscape has been a major theme in my work. The natural world has been a place for reflection and inspiration from early childhood and remains so today. Portraiture is a different proposition. I've always enjoyed the exchange of ideas and experiences when working with a sitter, both looking and listening are crucial aspects of making work.

Could you tell us a bit about your artistic process?
I've always set myself projects, these are often experimental; I enjoy new ways of working and taking chances. Some are long term, some short but they all feed into each other creating connected threads.
Have you always worked in acrylics? What do you like about them?
I've come to acrylic painting fairly recently, I use a 'fluid' version which suits my slightly reckless way of painting.
What has been a highlight of your artistic career?
When I was four years old I remember deciding that I wanted to be an artist, I've stuck with that choice and it's never let me down.

Do you have a favourite piece you are exhibiting at the RBA Annual Exhibition 2025 and why?
I like all the small heads I'm exhibiting with the RBA. I started painting them in 2020 during lockdown and have continued to work on the series ever since. They are a cast of characters to lift the spirits, highlighting common human experiences and concerns, I'm very grateful to them.
