Winner: Lucy Springall
My art practice is centred around finding ways to communicate, through painting, how and why we should value nature and the non-human world - a subject that is of critical importance in this period of ecological crisis.
In the artist's words:
I recently graduated from City and Guilds of London Art School with a BA in Fine Art. My art practice is centred around finding ways to communicate, through painting, how and why we should value nature and the non-human world - a subject that is of critical importance in this period of ecological crisis. I currently do this through depicting intimate moments of connection between the human and non-human.
Another layer to my work is its reflection of my health and wellbeing journey… The importance of nature as a place to restore and relax, and the depiction of hands and feet to represent being present in the moment and coming out of our heads and into our bodies.
Taking part in the Crinan Residency will provide me with the time and space to deepen and broaden my practice. The west coast of Scotland is home to the majority of the UK’s temperate rainforest and Crinan Woods is a prime example. I plan to spend at least a day or two there sketching and painting. The coastal location will provide me with the opportunity to observe the local wildlife and perhaps speak with local fishermen. I would also like to find out about local folktales and incorporate them into my work.
