Korean Art London
- | North, East & West Gallery
Korean Art London 2023 is the launch edition of a boutique art fair presenting works in all media from over thirty established and emerging artists from South Korea. Many of the artists draw from Korea's rich artistic traditions to create a fresh visual language.
East Gallery: The Korean Five
Five artists have been selected by Korean Art London's founder, gallerist Rok Hee Hwang, to make up a showcase of the highest level of contemporary South Korean painting: Soon Young Yang, Sang Woon Nam, Min Chan Kim, Jun Won Lee and Lee K. These artists have exhibited widely in their home country and have established global reputations.
West Gallery: Ancient x Modern
Curated by Vittoria Beltrame, Mall Galleries' West Gallery is divided into two spaces that converse with one another. Artists whose work is inspired by traditional Korean culture, arts and crafts are on one side: Ellyang, Jeong Min Kim, Ji Yeun Hon, Jong Beom Kwak, Na Ri Choi, Choong Mok Yoo, Kyoung Mug Park, Won Seok Lee and Hyoung Pyo Hong. While those who engage with cutting-edge media and practices are on the other: Anikoon, MeMe, Guy Won Lee, Jin Seok Lee, Je Won Yoon, Dong Jin Kim, Sung Hee Kim, Jin Hyun Nam, Suu, Mi Jeong Cho, Je Eun Chung, Chae Rim Heo and So Ra Shin.
North Gallery: Colour
Curated by Seulki Yoo, work in the North Gallery explores the dialogue between our inner and outer worlds through colour. The artists are: Ji Young Hong, who uses a thermal imaging camera to make expressive portraits from an alternative viewpoint; Ha Jin Lee whose sculptural figures are painted in the hot ochres of Mexico; J Ryu whose bright palette is also influenced by Mexican imagery; Seon Ok Lim who creates vibrant paintings using the window has a metaphor for dislocation; Mi Ran Woo who impressionistic paintings of trees attempt to capture a dynamic point in space; Duk Hwan Cho who mixes nostalgic imagery and icons of popular culture; Jeong Min Kim who paints highly detailed lush forests of bamboo leaves on hanji paper; Ji Yuen Hong (Jeong Min Kim's daughter) whose dynamic and humorous canvases depict a full-spectrum mass wriggling towards an unseen nucleus or heart; and Sung Hee Kim who makes playful paintings of trees, flowers, birds and boats.
London Gallery Programme
As part of the KAL satellite programme, there is a solo show of Sang Woon Nam's work at Aleph Contemporary.
