Andrew Barrowman PS

Statement

Andrew Barrowman is an artist who works in the landscape, most often preferring to work en plein air (in the open air - on location).

He loves exploring ‘off the beaten track’ and always seeks out alternative views of familiar places.

Andrew records these landscapes by creating a number of sketches, using a variety of media, in his daily sketchbook.

These sketches are then used as unique references for his final paintings and drawings. Andrew is particularly interested in studies of light and perspective that reflect the subtle nuances of the changing landscape through the seasons.

He was elected a full member of the Pastel Society in June 2023 and an Associate Member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists in May 2023.

He exhibits regularly with RBSA in Birmingham, New English Art Club and the Pastel Society in London. His work is represented by galleries in Cornwall, Devon, Cotswolds, Derbyshire and Cambridgeshire.

In 2021 he won the Bowyer Drawing Prize at the New English Art Club annual exhibition and was Highly Commended at the RBSA Friends exhibition.

During 2020 and 2021 he painted the view from his studio window over 120 times - recording the changing landscape over this period. The resulting studies were made into his first published book: ‘Views from the studio window’.

Andrew teaches regularly at St Ives School of Painting and with Cornwall School of Art in Truro, as well as running workshops at his studio in Redruth.

Methodology

Andrew uses a variety of dry media but favours charcoal. He enjoys the subtle tones that can be created by this wonderful medium. He works tonally and prefers to build up his drawings quickly and energetically with random mark making, without using lines that restrict the freedom to experiment. He then begins to define areas of the drawing by constantly removing and reapplying marks until the desired result is achieved.

Bio

Andrew was born in Stratford Upon Avon and studied Technical Illustration at Leamington Spa and Wildlife Illustration at Carmarthen College of Art. He worked in an advertising studio for several years before embarking on a career in illustration and then fine art.

He has lived in Cornwall for over 25 years and currently has his studio at Krowji, Redruth. Andrew exhibits regularly in London with Pastel Society, NEAC and RBA at the Mall Galleries and with RBSA in Birmingham.
