Julia’s inspiration comes from drawing in the wild, the geology of islands. The colours and essence of different places. Rock formations on which birds nest. Rocky outcrops over which sea birds glide.
Looking and drawing the insect world found in my garden, just loving discovering and drawing the night world, lured into my moth trap.
A colourful celebration of the natural world.
Methodology
Julia creates limited edition original handmade prints using etching, collograph and relief print techniques on Somerset printmaking paper or Japanese paper. Her subject matter is drawn from life, birds often observed and drawn through her telescope and then worked on further in the studio.
During lockdown I started doing a Daily Moth Drawing. Each evening, from day 1, I set up my a moth trap in my garden. The excitement each morning opening it inspired me. I would pick a moth put it in a clear plastic pot and draw it using a magnifying glass. Afterwards, I would release it into a shady spot in the garden and post the drawing on Instagram (juliamanningartist). The prints I am exhibiting in The Natural Eye 2020 are created from these drawings. The different species of moths caught have gradually changed from when I started in March, making it a real Moth Diary.
