The Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours presents a series of special events to complement their 212th Exhibition
Exhibition Tour and Portfolio Review
Thursday 28 March | 11:30am
Jean Noble RI will lead a tour of the exhibition. She will also be happy to critique any work brought in by visitors. This may be on tablets, iPads, etc or as a painting.
Artist Demonstration: Painting with Detail and Expression
Saturday 30 March | 11am to 4pm
Matthew Phinn RI will be demonstrating how to paint with detail and expression, showing a few tricks to help improve your own work. Please stop by for a chat and to take a look at Matthew's sketchbooks.
Artist Demonstration: Opacity and the Ocean
Tuesday 2 April | 11am to 4pm
Brendan Smith RI will be painting a marine/coastal scene combining the transparent and opaque qualities of watercolour and acrylic.
Artist Demonstration: Layered Translucency
Wednesday 3 April | 11am to 4pm
Felicity Flutter RI will be painting in the gallery, discussing her watercolour process using layers of translucent colours.
Artist Talk: Making Sense of the Abstract
Thursday 4 April | 11:30am
Jean Noble RI will give a talk about abstract art. She will be in the gallery until 4pm to talk to visitors.

Exhibition Tour

Teresa Lawler RI will conduct a tour of the exhibition, exploring the breadth of paintings exhibited. She will examine the subjects chosen and processes used by artists to achieve their objectives.

Artist Demonstration: Scribbly Sketching
Saturday 6 April | 11am to 4pm
Gary Cook RI will be painting tree scenes using watercolour, ink and charcoal in the gallery. He will also have a selection of scribbly sketchbooks on show to flick through and gain inspiration.
Artist Demonstration: Spontaneous Cityscapes

Brendan Smith RI will be painting a cityscape in watercolour with an emphasis on spontaneous wet-in-wet effects.
A Celebration of Watercolour, sponsored by Winsor & Newton
Tuesday 9 April | 2pm to 5pm
An opportunity to see watercolour through the eyes of the artist, through the lens of science, and through the passage of time. Alongside the RI Exhibition, this event will give you an opportunity to:
- Try a range of Winsor & Newton watercolour paints, brushes and papers – including an exclusive preview of new materials launching soon – and work on collaborative artworks with artist Andrew Carter
- Experience chemist Mark Cann bring the science behind watercolour to life with live production demonstrations
- Discover the history of paint and pigments through the Winsor & Newton archives with artist Stephanie Nebbia
- Watch RI members Matthew Phinn, Roger Dellar and Brian Smith paint live and gain insights on their process
RI Art Event Evening: Paint with RI Members
Tuesday 9 April | 6pm to 8:30pm
Following the success of last year's event, another opportunity to paint in watercolour with RI Members at an evening event.
RI Members including Roger Dellar, Brian Smith and Matthew Phinn will be taking part.
The paintings produced will be judged by the President and Members of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, with a first prize of Winsor & Newton art materials to the value of £150 awarded to the most successful painting, and two runner-up prizes of Winsor & Newton art materials worth £75 each.
What to expect:
6pm: Artists arrive and commence painting from two clothed portrait models or a still life arrangement
7pm: A short break for complimentary refreshments, including a glass of wine
7:15pm: Painting resumes
8:15pm: Judging commences, after which the Winner and runners-up will be declared
Participants should bring their own paper and art materials. Easels and boards will be provided on a 'first come, first served' basis, therefore artists are encouraged to bring small, portable easels wherever possible.
Tickets are available via Eventbrite, priced £12 to participate, or £10 to spectate.
Artist Demonstration: Sketching the Show
Wednesday 10 April | 11am to 4pm
Kate Bentley RI will be demonstrating her technique of sketching in watercolour by sketching the exhibition itself! She is happy to answer questions on her technique, materials and exhibits.
Artist Demonstration: Spontaneous Cityscapes

Brendan Smith RI will be painting a cityscape in watercolour with an emphasis on spontaneous wet-in-wet effects.
Artist Demonstration: Watercolour and Mixed Media
Friday 12 April | 11am to 4pm
Chris Forsey RI, specialist in watercolour and mixed media, will be painting in the gallery.
Artist Demonstration: Painting with Detail and Expression
Saturday 13 April | 11am to 4pm
Matthew Phinn RI will be painting in the gallery once again demonstrating watercolour techniques and chatting to visitors.
