Paul Newland NEAC

Statement

Paul has lived in London for most of his life. Now, and away from London, the give and take of urban and rural visions absorbs him; the merging and flux at the edges. The capriccio, an art form with a long and honourable history, combines elements within a picture which, in real life, never were in sight of each other. This kind of lying-in-order-to-reveal-a-truth suggests ways of combining memory and imagination with observation: Paul Newland’s current concern in painting. Still life appears in his work from time to time.

Methodology

Paul Newland’s ideal, technically, has always been to work quickly and finish quickly. In the event, this hasn’t happened - except with a few watercolours which were little more than studies. Smaller works are mostly begun in front of the subject matter (though not always) but seldom completed thus. Colour sketches, drawings and sometimes photographs are made and consulted. Pictures, even watercolours, even quite small ones, can go on for a very long time in an on-off sort of way. 

Only recently has he begun working outside with oil paint. There is a sense of adventure about this and when away from all shelter, in our climate, chance rules.
