“Still Life” – an exhibition of photographs by award-winning photographer Britta Jaschinski
This powerful photographic exhibition, presented by Humane Society International/UK and featuring award-winning photographer Britta Jaschinski, will highlight the urgent need to protect wildlife and ban the importation of hunting trophies to the UK. The exhibit will present the devastating reality of trophy hunting and wildlife trade, demonstrating the tragic impact of these practices on endangered species, and documenting the urgent fight against wildlife exploitation.
Renowned for her unique photography, Jaschinski is a London-based photojournalist and co-founder of global campaigns to investigate the connection between humans and nature and the impact of this relationship, documenting crimes against wildlife and the environment. Britta has won numerous photography awards, recently winning the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2024 award in the photojournalism category with her photograph “Dusting for New Evidence”, which will be included as part of this exhibition.
Visitors will be taken through an impactful audio-visual experience featuring more than thirty evocative images of trophies from wildlife trade, accompanied by sounds of wildlife in nature, including animals’ reactions during hunts. As visitors reach the end of the exhibition, they will be invited to contribute their opinions on the exhibition and on trophy hunting. On certain public days, a videographer will be present to capture expressions and feelings of visitors who would like to share these, and a resulting film will be used by HSI/UK to urge politicians to support a ban on trophy hunting imports to the UK.
Trophy hunting is an industry built on inexcusable animal cruelty for human entertainment. Trophy hunters typically target the world’s most magnificent and powerful animals, including endangered and vulnerable species such as elephants, polar bears, lions and rhinos. These species are already under increasing pressure from loss of habitat, climate change, poaching and the illegal wildlife trade. Trophy hunting incentivizes the unsustainable and inhumane exploitation of wildlife, conflicting with and undermining the viability of ethical non-management approaches.
“Still Life” at the Mall Galleries will be open to the public with entrance free of charge: Tuesday 8th April – Saturday 12th April 2025.
