About Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours
The Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI) was founded 190 years ago. It was formed by eight members of a previous Society, led by Joseph Powell who became the RI's first President. When created, almost 200 years ago, the intention of this new Society was to encourage and educate painters in the fine art of watercolour, seeking the best artists to become members by giving them the opportunity to exhibit their work, a principle that the Society still holds to this day.
