International Women’s Day x Mall Galleries

Saturday 8 March, 11am to 5pm

International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated annually on March 8, honours the achievements of women across all aspects of life - social, economic, political, and cultural - while also advocating for gender equality.

Join us at Mall Galleries to celebrate with a day of artist demonstrations during the annual exhibition of the Royal Society of British Artists.

Three inspiring women artists, each exhibiting at the RBA Annual Exhibition, will demonstrate their techniques live in the galleries. Plus members of the gallery team, including Exhibitions Coordinator, Kate Towsey will be on hand to talk to visitors about the exhibition and all things Mall Galleries.

Free with gallery admission, no booking required.

Enfield Elisha 2301 (iii) jpg

Artist Demo: Elisha Enfield

11am to 1pm

Elisha Enfield’s work is concerned with the liminal, the betwixt and between. Her subjects linger at the edges of perception; we feel rather than know them to be present. In recent work, Enfield explores the divided history of burnings - from ancient funeral pyres, through witch hysteria, to modern community celebrations. Simple, joyful, yet macabre.

Enfield’s paintings have featured in the John Ruskin Prize, Beep Painting Biennial and Discerning Eye, where she was awarded the Landscape and Midlands Prizes. She is the winner of Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year 2022. Her work is held in the DE Collection, National Waterways Museum and private collections internationally.

Artist Demo: Rizza Zahid

1pm to 3pm

Rizza Zahid is a self-taught visual artist currently based in London. She primarily works in ink and charcoal with elements of mixed media to create surreal drawings that delve into the complex dynamics of human relationships and everyday experiences. Through vivid imagery and intricate details, she tries to capture the mysterious and thought-provoking aspects of these connections. Each piece reflects a blend of imagination and reality where the scenes and characters depicted are heavily informed by the diverse communities she has grown up around.

Arif Rachel Hazy Blue Clouds over Rochdale Tops jpeg

Artist Demo: Rachel Arif

3pm to 5pm

Rachel Arif is an award winning artist from Rochdale, Lancashire, known for her atmospheric sea and landscapes, which are gestural, heartfelt and emotional. She also paints more figurative still life and portrait subjects, several of which are in private collections throughout the UK. Her preferred mediums are oil paint and pastel.

She is a member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Small Paintings Group and is an Associate Member of the Society of Women Artists. Rachel currently lives in London with her husband and two children, Sophia and Isaac. She has been exhibiting her work since 2014.

International Women's Day (IWD) has been around for over a hundred years, as have many of the issues still impacting women's advancement. Since 1911, IWD belongs to all who care about women's equality. Celebrate women's achievement. Raise awareness about discrimination. Take action to forge gender parity. All IWD activity is valid, that's what makes IWD so inclusive.
